Individual Coverage
Individual health insurance is a type of health coverage that is purchased by individuals for themselves and their families, rather than through an employer or other group.
ON EXCHANGE: Colorado offers a health insurance exchange, Connect for Health Colorado, which allows individuals to compare and purchase plans from private insurance companies. Individuals may also be eligible for financial assistance to help reduce the cost of premiums and out-of-pocket expenses. Additionally, Colorado has implemented several consumer protections, such as coverage for pre-existing conditions and essential health benefits.
OFF EXCHANGE: Off-exchange health insurance plans in Colorado refer to plans that are purchased directly from a health insurance company or broker, rather than through Connect for Health Colorado, the state's health insurance exchange. Off-exchange plans offer many of the same benefits and protections as on-exchange plans, including coverage for essential health benefits, pre-existing conditions, and preventive care. However, off-exchange plans may have different premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket maximums than on-exchange plans. Additionally, individuals who purchase off-exchange plans are not eligible for premium tax credits or cost-sharing reductions, which are available to those who purchase plans through Connect for Health Colorado and meet certain income requirements.
